The self is a fiction we believe in.

Each of us is a compound creature: a product of our biology, our experiences and our environment. 'I' do not exist - I am emergent.

Yet we recognise a single 'self', like a droplet of water that continually reforms and is never the same, yet is somehow recognisable from one moment to the next.
